‘Bhoota’ means a divine spirit. It is also known as ‘Daiva’.
‘Kola’ means play in Tulu. Puranas say ganas are sent by Lord Shiva to take
care of people in tulunad. People of Mangalore and Udupi worship these spirits.
Some of the prominent daivas are Jumadi Banta, Kallurti, Jarandaya, Varthe,
Panjurli, Kalkuda, Guliga, Thanimaniga, Sathyadevathe, Manthra devathe,
Chamundi etc,.
Annually Nema will be organized in Daiva
Sana(Place where we worship bhoota). On this day, Daiva Sana will be decorated
with flowers, tender coconuts, and lighting. The arrival of the
"Bhandara" is the most exciting moment. During nema, the paddana will
be sung by their people. This song describes the birth of spirit and their stories.
In this way, bhoota kola is seen as one of the most important aspects of rural
life. Along with temples, even in houses, people worship divas.
