Tulunad
spreads from Kalyani river in Udupi district to the Chandragiri river in
Kerala. As per Hindu Mythology, this land is created by Lord Parashurama. So, it is
also known as 'Prashurama Srusti'.
Tulu is the primary language of Tulunadu. As such, they are
broadly known as Tuluvas. In Tulunadu, whether you are a Hindu, Muslim,
Christian or Jain, whether you are a Brahmin, Billava, Bunt. Devadiga, Konkani
or anyone, all the people speak in Tulu language. Tulu is the common language
of all communities in this region. Also, Kannada, Konkani, byari etc., are the
other languages widely spoken.
Chalukyas, Hoysalas, Kadambas, Alupas, Portuguese, Rashtrakutas,
Vijayanagara dynasty ruled this land. Alupas ruled in tulunad for the longest
period of time.
Major
cities of tulunad are Mangalore(Dakshina Kannada district), Udupi and
Kasaragod.
